YESTERDAY’S heavy rains did not stop hordes of devotees of the Our Lady of Guadalupe from joining the annual procession in honor of the Patroness of Cebu.
Devotees, who attended the hour-long procession were estimated to reach more than 20,000.

The solemn walk began at past 5 p,m. in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Church, going through the streets V. Rama Avenue.

Many of the faithful carried images of the Blessed Mother.

“Panata na ni namo kada tuig (Its been our tradition every year),” said Gloria Tabordal, 37 who came all the way from Barangay Babag, a Cebu City mountain village.

Today, the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu celebrates its 83rd annual fiesta with the theme, “Ubos sa Pangama sa Mahal nga Maria sa Guadalupe sa Sugbu ang Matag Katalingban Magkahiusa ug Magtambayayong Padulong sa Kausaban ug Kalambuan (each society unites and cooperates for change and progress).”

After the procession, an estimated 5,000 devotees attended a concelebrated Mass officiated by Bishop Dennis Villarojo.

A 10 a.m. High Mass will be officiated by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma at the Guadalupe Parish; while another concelebrated Mass, this time at Langub Shrine, will be held.

The Mass will be officiated by Rt. Rev. Msgr. Esteban Binghay, who consecrated the cave in December 1977, making it a holy place for worshipers and devotees of the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

SHE was only five years old when her father first brought her to the Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Barangay Guadalupe to attend the Mass in celebration of the fiesta of the Virgin Mary under that title.

Since then, they would go every year, without fail.

Today, at 53, Maringuran is passing the tradition to her four children and her 4-month-old grandson.

Maringuran, her husband Leo and their grandson, were inside the parish church yesterday along with thousands of devotees who attended the 10 a.m. Mass celebrated by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

“This has been part of our family tradition to attend Mass here during the fiesta. I have been blessed with good health, family and a peaceful life,” she told Cebu Daily News in Cebuano.

Her family also makes it a point to visit the Langub or cave of the Our Lady of Guadalupe in Barangay Kalunasan.

“I could still remember that we passed the waters from the creek before just to reach the cave,” Maringuran told CDN.

Langub, as it is popularly called, is also among the most visited religious sites in Cebu City.

There is a story that the Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared before some locals in Kalunasan.

Another devotee, 43-year-old Vilma Vijic, from Barangay Liburon, Carcar City, also attended the Mass and sold candles to other devotees.

Vijic has been a devotee of Our Lady of Guadalupe for 23 years and has always prayed that her son would finish his studies.

Now she prays harder because her son is now a trainee at the Central Office of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

“I always pray to her to help me raise my children and let them finish their studies and for them to find work,” Vijic said in Cebuano.

Popular devotion

“We are the daughters of Mexico in terms of Diocese, that is why it is important. It is the most popular devotion in pilgrim visits,” Palma said.

There are nine parishes in Cebu that have Mary as their patroness.

“Whatever title the Mother Mary has, the important thing is that we have the devotion. We join the Universal Church in thanking God because of Our Mother’s grace, the Mother of all,” Palma said during his homily.

The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe started in Mexico.

It was Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer, who brought the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe to Cebu in 1521.

Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who was archbishop of Cebu in 2002, declared Our Lady of Guadalupe as the principal Patroness of Cebu.

(A special CDN series on the Philippine National Police and the war on illegal drugs in Central Visayas)

For eight years, Liza Saballa has been working in Hong Kong as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to provide for the needs of her family in Cebu.

“Naningkamot ko aron makaeskwela ang akong mga anak. Buot nako sila tagaan og maayong kaugmaon (I am doing my best so I can send my children to school. I want them to have a bright future),” she said.

But last July 24, at around 2 p.m., Saballa received an unexpected call from one of his three children in Cebu City.

The 46-year-old single mother was told that her eldest son, Judeniño, was killed in a police operation in their place in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City.

According to the Guadalupe police, Judeniño was a drug pusher and robber who tried to engage the operatives in a shootout, prompting them to retaliate.

Judeniño, 25, suffered gunshot wounds on his head and chest. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

His mother was dumbfounded when she heard the news.

“Wala ko kasabot sa akong gibati. Dili ko makatuo nga namatay ang akong anak. Monas-ginhawa nako og pagpanrabaho aron mabuhi ang akong anak, unya gisayon-sayon lang nila og patay. Pagkasalbahis ning mga tawhana (I didn’t understand what I felt. I could not believe that my son is dead. I worked so hard to provide for my children’s needs and just like that, the police took the life of my son. These people are just too cruel),” Saballa told Cebu Daily News through Messenger.

Although based abroad, Saballa said she knew her children were never into any illegal activities.

Her father has been taking care of her children from the time she separated with her husband years ago.

Judeniño dropped out of college due to financial constraints.

The police said Judeniño was responsible for a robbery incident in Cebu City and was on their drugs watch list.

But Saballa denied the accusations leveled against her son. She said there were witnesses who saw how the police intentionally killed Judeniño while repairing a motorcycle outside their house in Barangay Guadalupe.

“Gituyo nila og patay ang akong anak. Dihay mga nakakita nga nakadagan pa unta siya pero gigukod sa mga pulis unya gibirahan gyud(My son was killed on purpose. People saw that he tried to run, but the police chased and shot him),” the grieving mother said.

Saballa believed the police are pressured to kill even innocent people so that they will have something to report to their bosses.

In trying to please the government, she said, policemen sacrificed her son.

“Nakauyon man ko sa campaign against illegal drugs. Gani nibotar man ko ni Duterte niadtong election (I have nothing against the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. In fact, I voted for Duterte in the last elections),” she said.

“Apan wala nako damha nga mamatay ang akong anak tungod sa mga pulis nga bakakon. Nagpabilib lang na sila aron motaas ang ilang ranggo(But I did not expect my son to die just because of these cops who lie to impress their superiors so that they will be promoted),” she added.

The bitter promise

Even before he won the country’s presidency, Rodrigo Roa Duterte boldly announced his plan to eradicate illegal drugs by all means — a campaign promise supported by hundreds of thousands of Filipinos fed up with rampant crime.

On one occasion, he said 100,000 people would die and numerous bodies would be dumped in Manila Bay that the fish would grow fat from feeding on them.

Of 54.36 million registered voters in the May 2016 polls, 16 million believed in him and entrusted to him the presidency.

At noon of June 30, Duterte assumed his post. And from then on till December 14, 2016, a total of 2,102 drug suspects, like Judeniño, were killed in alleged legitimate police operations nationwide; while 3,993 others were gunned down by unknown assailants, data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) showed. Meanwhile, 40,932 drug suspects were arrested in the country.

In Central Visayas, 149 drug suspects were killed in alleged shootouts with policemen, and at least 219 others were gunned down by so-called vigilantes. Since the government launched its relentless campaign against illegal drugs, 4,306 drug suspects were arrested in different police operations in the region.
At least 8,000 grams of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) valued at P99 million were seized and 4,565 drug cases were filed in court.

Some 91,856 drug users and pushers surrendered to police precincts in the region at the onset of Oplan TokHang or Toktok Hangyo, a police door-to-door anti-drug campaign where suspects are asked to surrender and sign documents renouncing their drug-induced life.

Notably, the number of surrenderers in Central Visayas is way higher than the 8,000 people listed in a drug watch list of the Police Regional Office (PRO-7).

NEXT: The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Central Visayas believes that their efforts are bearing “positive results”.

Kalunasan jails OK move to stop creek pollution

THE foul smell in Langub Creek in Barangay Kalunasan may soon be gone.

This will happen if the officials of the Cebu City Jail and the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) will stick to their commitment not to discharge their waste water at the creek.

The representatives of both jails met with officials of Cebu City government and Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7) last week to find a solution to the mountain barangay’s problem.

Francisco “Bimbo” Fernandez, executive assistant of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, said that on the part of the city, they have already declogged the septic tanks in the city jail as a temporary measure.

As a long-term solution, he said the city is planning to hire again the services of Mactan Rock Industries, Inc. in order to treat the wastes of the Cebu City Jail.

“The city hired Mactan Rock before. But it was stopped because eventually the city was not able to pay them. So now, we’re trying to find out what happened and why they were not paid,” he said.

Fernandez said that they found out that the city still owes Mactan Rock around P700,000.

While this is still being worked out, Fernandez assured that the city will continue to regularly declog the waste in the city jail’s septic tanks.

These were brought to the city’s Septage Treatment Plant (STP) in the North Reclamation Area.

“They will contain the wastewater for the meantime inside the drums until such time they can find a private contractor which can transport and treat their wastewater,” said lawyer Unalee Monares, the chief legal officer of EMB-7, after their technical conference last Jan. 17.

EMB-7 recommended that both facilities should hire an accredited private contractor to transport and treat their wastewater.

“We are also recommending to the CPDRC to also hire a private contractor or the Mactan Rock Inc. but they also need to consider if there is a budget,” he said.

For the CPDRC, Fernandez said they would also meet separately with provincial officials on the issue.

He said the city is willing to temporarily help the CPDRC by declogging their septic tanks as well and bringing the wastes to the STP, which will eventually be under the possession and management of the province since this is part of the city properties to be swapped to the 93-1 lots owned by the province.

DHARRYL Balabas scored a game-high 22 points in his season debut Friday night as the Rams slipped past the Stallions, 65-61, in the Elite Basketball Club-Cebu Season 8 at the Visayan Glass Gym in Guadalupe, Cebu City.

The Rams opened with a 15-5 spurt but the Stallions slowly chipped at their deficit and finally tied the score at endgame.

Lubiano, coming off from a big game in their last outing, then converted his go-ahead layup before Tenebro drained his charity shots for the win.

Trystan Chu paced the Stallions with 16 points while Jerry Aloba and Jay Tampus tallied 11 and 10, respectively.

In the second game, the Tigers nipped the Sharks, 79-73 with Niño Belande scoring 30 points with 11 rebounds. James Cabilino added 25 markers.

A change in venue and limited preparations resulted to a smaller crowd who watched the annual Buhing Kalbaryo in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City last Good Friday.

Director Elmer Labella said they only have over 2,000 people who watched the stage play, a reenactment of the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, at a private lot in Barangay Guadalupe.

Labella said their previous performances at the Guadalupe church grounds would draw in 5,000 to 6,000 viewers.

Still, there were the faithful like 58-year-old street cleaner Vivian Borandante who had been attending Buhing Kalbaryo performances for a decade now.

Borandante would walk from her house in Barangay Calamba to San Nicolas Parish then to Barangay Guadalupe to watch the stage play.

“Ganahan man mi motan-aw kay mag-sacrifice man mi (We want to watch it because it is part of our sacrifice),” said Borandante who was with her three other friends watching the first part of Buhing Kalbaryo in San Nicolas Parish.

The play is divided into three stages with the first part depicting the days prior to the crucifixion.

The second is a reenactment of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, a five-kilometer route marked by stations of the Cross that ended at a private lot where a simulated crucifixion took place at 3 p.m.

Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu procession set for today and tomorrow

THE Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu will hold its first grand procession of 15 Our Lady of Guadalupe replicas owned by different devotees, today, July 15, at 5:30 p.m. after the 4 p.m. Mass.

This is in accordance with the 115th fiesta celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe tomorrow, July 16.

A nine-day novena in honor of the Virgen of Guadalupe started last July 7 and will end today.

A procession of the original image of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe will be held on Sunday.

The grand procession today will be participated by the different devotees who will show their love, faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother.

According to Fr. Romeo “Dodong” Desuyo of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu, the second fiesta on Sunday is not well recognized by the Cebuanos because they think of it as the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel since the official feast day of the Our Lady of Guadalupe is on December 12.

“They should also know that the patroness of Cebu is having its second feast day — the ‘Fiesta Pasalamat,’” he added.

The Virgin Mary is dressed in red, with a blue mantle covering her head, cascading down to her feet.

Over the centuries, devotion to the Virgen of Guadalupe de Cebu spread through the island and miraculous cures and spiritual consolations were experienced by many devotees, the greatest of which was the immediate cessation of the cholera epidemic that hit Cebu in 1902, when the people of Guadalupe started a daily dawn penitential procession, invoking God’s mercy through the intercession of the Virgen of Guadalupe de Cebu.

This the Cebuanos did for 90 consecutive dawns, and the death toll ceased.

As an act of thanksgiving, the Virgin is given another feast day on July 16, to commemorate the deliverance from cholera, starting in 1902.

Father Desuyo is hopeful that the Cebuanos will join the first grand procession of the 15 replicas of the Our Lady of Guadalupe as well as the feast day tomorrow.

“Tungod sa kadaghan sa mga employees diri sa Barangay Guadalupe, madugay ta og human sa drug test. (Because of the bigger number of employees in Barangay Guadalupe, we took longer to finish the drug test) We expected at least 150 employees lang, but they have a total of 280 employees and today 8 are absent,” Lao said.

He said that he was asked by Guadalupe Barangay Captain Michael Gacasan to conduct the drug test.

They expected to get the drug test results on Thursday this week.
